The “Intellectual Girlfriend” – A Typecast of Sorts

A friend and I were having this convo yesterday. I was discussing an issue I was having with a guy. Not quite a romantic issue, but parked somewhere closed to that area. I’ll skip all of the banter and just get to the good stuff:
Me: It’s just funny because I feel like I’ve always been the chick that men like to have these intellectual convos with, but not necessarily date. Almost like…I’m their ‘Intellectual girlfriend’. Some of the guys are in a relationship.
Friend: I’m the chick that’s normally in the relationship, but can’t get my man to have those convos with me because he saves those for you.
Me: lol
Friend: lol
I started to think about it for a moment. I suppose that I would define this idea (just an idea, guys) of the ‘Intellectual Girlfriend’ as this: the woman that a man calls just for stimulating conversation. He doesn’t necessarily have any desire to date you. You just generally provide good advice and intriguing concepts. Note: This should not be confused with your great male friends, of which, I have many. This is that one guy that after you hang up the phone, or finish sending that last text, you think, ‘Um, I feel a little used and a tad bit drained.’ Read more »
Why I Hate Kimmy…
My real name is Kimberly. So, why do I hate Kimmy? Kimmy is a concept. Growing up, and pretty much up until last year, I wouldn’t allow people to call me Kimmy because I felt like it didn’t represent my personality. Kimmy reminds me of pink marshmallows, fluffy clouds and a sugar-coated sense of normality. I thought, ‘How am I going to rebel against the norm with a nickname like Kimmy?’ Not having it. So, I named this blog “ihatekimmy” to kind of proclaim my dedication to all things original and different.
Then, I made my Twitter handle KimmyGotSoul, a play off of Dreamgirls’ “Jimmy Got Soul”…and everyone started calling me Kimmy. #fail I decided to just make “Kimmy” a rebel in her own right. Let’s get some things straight- Kimmy does not wear pink unless it’s scorching hot and used to accent black. Kimmy will pop the trunk on you if you get out of pocket. Kimmy will only allow you to use three consecutive “Kimmy’s” in public. Kimmy will not be abused. Kimmy will refer you to her pimp hand if your vocal inflection is too high when pronouncing “Kimmy”. Kimmy is not amused by your antics. Lastly, Kimmy is just a side chick. Kim is my main squeeze and Kimberly and I have a “business” relationship. Got it?
